Shaldon Regatta Ltd
APM 2011
The Annual Public Meeting of the Shaldon Regatta Ltd was held at the Over-Sixties Club in Shaldon on the 4th of February 2011.
Treasurer's Report
In spite of the weather the results were excellent. It was the first time in anyone's memory that a whole day had to be cancelled. Despite this the Draw takings were up £181 on last year to £2738.
Entries were down due to the cancelled day and bucket collections were similarly down. The bank balance is up a little at £11,041.
We received a legacy of £250 from the estate of Hazel Pritchard.
Chairman's Report
August 2010 saw the running of the 193rd Shaldon Regatta . In line with the apparent increase in extremes in global weather, Shaldon joined in and, to my knowledge, it was the first and only time we have been forced to cancel a whole day of events. The conditions on the Wednesday were appalling and I was amazed to see how many people turned out to see if it was going ahead. Such is our reputation for carrying on whatever.
The Regatta started well on the Sunday with the marathon Dawlish to Shaldon Row. It was rowed from Dawlish in very favourable conditions. Unfortunately Monday dawned with more wind than was safe for many of the Otter helms and so a decision was made to amalgamate the two Otter sessions into one. Things perked up in the afternoon and there was a good Rounders competition. No sooner had the rounders finished than the very enjoyable Treasure Hunt by boat started.
Tuesday morning we had the reworked Otter races. Although better than Monday the conditions were not ideal and the team Otter were to be congratulated on putting on such a good event.
The Volleyball standards remain high and the competition resulted in a very exciting final. Busy Tuesday was concluded with the ever popular King Kanute competition.
As Wednesday was cancelled we saw a revised programme for rowing on the Thursday, starting earlier and encompassing all the Cup races from the day before. This also included the Novice and Senior Seine boat races.
Friday saw a very definite improvement in the weather and time for the motor boat and rowing races. Friday night was an opportunity to relax and enjoy Clarry's Pirate party on the Quay with Antigua Joe.
We then started a very busy Bank Holiday weekend. The sailing programme got underway and the very industrious Sandcastles competition. This was followed by the Gig & Punt and then the Beach Sports with the Tug of War concluding the events of the day.
Sunday started bright and early with Swimming followed by sailing and the Five a Side football which has now established itself as a popular event.
The Duck Race demonstrated very clearly the versatility of John.s Racing Ducks. All summer they trained for a course from the Ness into the harbour and at the last minute they were switched to a sprint off the beach and heading for the Ness. They rose to the occasion and gave us a very close fast race. Sunday concluded with the Seine boat racing which provided some very good racing and close finishes.
Monday started with another successful swimming programme and was followed by the last of the sailing events. Next up was the Beach Kricket which again provided plenty of entertainment. I.ve never known so many entries for the pillow fight, something in excess of 50 men and plenty of ladies. As soon as that had finished we went straight into the Prize giving and Grand Draw. Once again the Prize Dinghy will be staying in the village and hopefully to be rowed in next year.s Regatta.
As always I would like to finish by thanking all those who help to make the Regatta happen, especially the Committee and in particular I would like to thank two of the people who do so much behind the scenes that we do not all see. Our Secretary Trish, and our Treasurer Alan.
