Shaldon Regatta Ltd
APM 2010
The Annual Public Meeting of the Shaldon Regatta Ltd was held at the Over-Sixties Club in Shaldon on the 22nd of January 2010.
Chairman Mark Pile opened the occasion by welcoming everyone to Shaldon Regatta's 2010 Annual Public Meeting and continued by stating that the 2009 event was another excellent, well run Regatta.
Unfortunately Sir Robin Maxwell-Hyslop, former local MP and a current vice-president of the Regatta, had died during the year and Mark made note of his support over many years.
All the officers were re-elected along with the committee with the addition of Guy Jones, Heather Crawford, Chris Brathwaite and Mike Maisey.
After the usual apologies and signing off the minutes of the last APM, treasurer Alan Jones gave his report in which he stated that once again the Regatta had proved successful and there was enough in the kitty to run the event in 2010! Two records were set in 2009 with over two thousand pounds donated by the patrons, for which thanks was given, and the prize draw bringing in over two and a half thousand pounds. A proportion of the monies had been spent on a new seine boat, sails for the Otter Dinghies and a shed for the new store. A vote of thanks was given to Alan for all his hard work and it was agreed to send a letter of thanks to Tony Partis who audits the accounts.
Mark then started his Chairman's report by remarking:
The older I get the more I struggle to remember the finer details of what happened as long ago as last August. I do take comfort from what this tells me, that 2009 was yet another good regatta, as I am sure I would remember if it wasn't!
The Dawlish Row, although from Maidencombe, was another well-contested race with individual battles throughout the fleet.
On Monday we had the Rounders with the predominantly younger competitors. From the centre of the event you hear one voice alternating between umpire, to commentator, to rule maker!
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings saw the two sessions of swimming, working, as usual, like clockwork right on the top of the tide.
The Beach Volleyball on Tuesday confirmed my belief that the standard of this event is way above that when it originally started.
We had good fleets in the various rowing races on Wednesday and Thursday. Keeping the River Teign Rowing Club 'series' rowers out of the Seine boat racing on Wednesday evening seems to have worked very well with a good number of boats taking part.
Thursday night delivered the usual large number of Treasure Hunter's and again was enjoyed by all.
We had Otter Sailing on Thursday and Friday morning and I have to say the fleet looked very smart with their new sails.
Friday afternoon passed with the traditional mixture of rowing and motor-boat races, the pub relay and bottom-board race.
Saturday was its usual very full self. Sandcastles followed by King Kanute, the Gig & Punt, Beachsports and, finally, the Tug-of-War. All the events were very well supported, but I was particularly heartened by the number of teams taking part in the Tug.
Saturday also saw the start of the sailing programme beginning with the Amory Cup for the Under 18's and continuing throughout the weekend.
Sunday started with the football which is maturing into a popular established event.
Sunday evening we had the Seine Boat racing with the races finishing with the traditional lap around the harbour. That lap looks better from the beach than it feels on the water!
Monday saw a tentative start to the Duck Race and we are considering going back to the previous training regime for the ducks next year.
Sunday continued in the sunshine with the Beach Kricket and the Pillow Fight.
The Regatta was rounded off in the traditional manner with the Prize giving and the Grand Draw, with yet another local winner of the boat.
Personal and heartfelt thanks to all on the Committee for their hard work.
Mark then proposed the Regatta would take place in 2010 and would start on Sunday 22nd August. All were in favour.
